She Did Not Want To Go To The Mall
This was going to be a long shopping trip. First she grumbled about having to carry a tote bag. She finished the grumbling by saying she wasn't interested in buying any school clothes.
Five years from now she would begin to enjoy a trip to the shopping mall. She would want to go through every single store. She would almost be ready for a charge card of her own.
This was not a day when a fashionista of the future would enjoy shopping. She'd rather play in her sandbox at home. She didn't want school clothes. She even refused to carry any packages.
I smiled down at the little girl and told her she would need bigger clothes by the time school started. She objected but followed along anyways. She knew she had to go shopping after all.
I told her we could go for an ice cream treat when we were done. She brightened up immediately. Then she said one of those odd things that little kids sometimes come up with. She said she was going to let her ice cream drip on her left foot and get all over her brown boot.
It really made me laugh to hear that strange idea. I asked why. What an imagination. I wondered why and she started to tell me. She told me she only wanted it to go on her left boot.
She grimaced in a grumpy way and told me she liked her right foot better than her left foot. She wanted to be mad at her left foot. She said she hated her left foot.
I was at a loss for words. How would I answer such a silly statement from a five-year old? We bought a dress with leggings and two pair of jeans and a blouse. Then we looked at winter sweaters.
She did seem to like the new jeans. She objected to buying a sweater cause it was too hot. I had to tell her she wasn't going to wear the sweaters till it snowed outside. Today the temperature was 80.
Finally we agreed on two sweaters and two blouses. Then we bought some socks and tights. Then we moved on to the shoe department.
There was a particular pair of women's brown boots on display that she liked a lot. I told her they didn't come in her size but we could look for some similar ones made for girls. She stubbornly said those were the only ones she would wear. I told her she'd have to wait till she grew bigger to fit into them.
I braced myself for an argument. She surprised me with a sweet smile and didn't voice any more complaints that day. She thought it over and decided she could live without those boots.
I smiled happily because she didn't complain any more. Now she was ready to go for her ice cream cone. She talked about school and said she liked her new clothes. She even helped me carry the bags home. As we headed for ice cream we discussed what flavor to order. She wanted vanilla with sprinkles and I wanted rocky road.
