The Primary Knowledge In Building A Permanent Magnet Alternator
If you find yourself running out of car or motor battery in an area where there is no auto parts store nearby, you could actually generate power without any battery or any other source of power required and that can be achieved by knowing how to build a permanent magnet alternator. Another benefit for using permanent magnet alternator is that it does not require any power to start operating compared to a standard field-wound alternator which needs 40 watts for it to energize the field.
The alternator actually compose of two parts, the rotor and the stator, which should be properly placed in order wherein the stator will be inserted into the rotor. Use the sprocket to adapt the rotor to the shaft and make sure that the sprocket is located at the center of the inside of the rotor. Before you withdraw the shaft from the sprocket hub, you have to spin first the rotor on the shaft. You will be needing to spin the rotor again, so to be able to do that you need to weld the sprocket to the rotor and remove the clamps re-inserting the shaft.
You have to protect the magnets on the rotor with the use of aluminum foil in welding the sprocket. Drill four even spaced holes for the bolts to get into the stator. At the same side of the stator, there should be bolt couplers with screws attached .
The base for the unit should also be welded with angle steel pieces aligning your aluminum or wood blocks to the outside edges of the base. Drill tap holes from the plate to the wood blocks placed on the underside of the base and screw one block into place.
over the outside of the stator with a masking tape and mount a bearing on the wood. The two parts of the alternator should slide on the shaft after enclosing the stator to the center of the rotor. The shaft will then be slided to the bearing combining the other block and bearing.
Align the nut couplers vertically and horizontally with the baseplate by spinning the rotor and measure the distance between bottom nut couplers to the base and the two top and bottom nut couplers. You should mark the measurements because this will serve as a guide where you would drill each piece of angle iron which is made after having all the measurements. When you start to re-assemble all the parts make sure that the uprights which are to be welded to the baseplate are aligned. The stator is also needed to be aligned inside the rotor by aligning and moving the shaft. Once everything is aligned to the right place, tighten the screws and the bearings on the shaft.
