Today, the piano is the most appreciated musical instrument. It can be used in many social events or gatherings, usually for formal occasions. It can also be done as a hobby, and learning to play it will also enable you to play the organ or the keyboard, as these instruments have a common theory of operation, even if their components vary from one another. You would be able to play any musical instrument smoothly, especially the piano if you clearly understand these concepts.
The Staff
The composer uses this group of lines to write the notes like in a normal writing notebook. In the case of a staff, the “guides” are made of five horizontal lines that may have two vertical lines on both ends. The notes are written either on the lines or in the spaces between.
The spaces between the lines are for the F, A, C, and high E notes from the bottom space up. The lines of the staff is taken by the notes E, G, B, D, and high F from the lowest to the highest line.
At the far left of the staff, there are detailed notations that tells the player how to proceed with playing the music. There are two clefs, the G-clef that symbolize notes of the higher range, and the Bass clef or the F clef representing the lower range of the standard notes. If there is no clef on the staff, it may be used to represent a series of percussion sounds.
In order to know when the music can start or end playing, the staff is cut into measures that divides the piece into sections.
The Time Signature
Written on the leftmost part of the staff, just like the clefs, the time signature denotes the beat or the timing of the notes being played. There are two numbers one over the other like a fraction. The number above indicates how many beats there are in a certain measure, and the number below tells how long each beat is. Example, in a ¾ time measure, there are three beats per measure and a quarter note is equal to one count.
The Notes
Notes may be whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and so forth. This shows how long the note is played, thus representing the transition between notes. Each note has a pitch that tells what octave it is located. Once you have learned the use of notes, it will be easier to read sheet music for easy piano playing.
